RPM and cutting speed
RPM is revolutions per minute. Cutting speed is the peripheral speed at the material contact point, commonly expressed in m/min or SFM.
Feed rate and chip load
Feed rate is distance travelled per minute. Chip load is the theoretical amount of material removed by each tooth or flute.
Shank diameter and cutting length
Shank diameter concerns clamping in a collet or chuck. Cutting length is the portion that actually cuts.
Bore, arbor and flanges
The bore is the centre hole in a disc or blade. The arbor and flanges mount it on the machine.
Runout and chatter
Runout is rotational deviation from the tool axis. Chatter is cyclic vibration that damages finish and increases load.
Limits and precautions
Terms can vary by manufacturer and market. Always compare the definition with the product technical sheet.
